About Yamunotri Temple

The first stop of the Chota Char Dham, Yamunotri honours the goddess Yamuna near the source of her river high in the Garhwal Himalayas. Pilgrims trek up to the shrine beside thermal springs, where rice is cooked in the boiling Surya Kund and offered as prasad to the goddess.

The shrine opens for the season as the deity is brought up from her winter seat at Kharsali.

Kapaat Closing (Bhai Dooj)

October–November

The shrine closes for winter and the goddess descends to Kharsali for six months.

Rice and potatoes cooked in the boiling thermal spring are offered to the goddess and taken home as blessed prasad.
