About Koneswaram Temple

Perched dramatically on Swami Rock above the Indian Ocean in Trincomalee, Koneswaram is one of the Pancha Ishwarams of Sri Lanka, dedicated to Bhagwan Shiva as Konesar. The classical 'Temple of a Thousand Pillars' was rebuilt after colonial destruction and remains a powerful coastal shrine.

Maha Shivaratri

February–March

The great night of Shiva is the cliff temple's most significant observance, with abhishekam and all-night worship of Bhagwan Konesar high above the Indian Ocean.

Annual Ther (Chariot) Festival

The temple's grand festival of processions and a chariot drawn around Swami Rock, drawing Tamil Hindu devotees from across the east coast.

Nine nights honouring the Goddess Mathumai Amman enshrined alongside Konesar at the cliff-top complex.

Within Fort Frederick on the headland above Trincomalee town; reached by road from Colombo (about 6 hours) or by train, then a climb up to the cliff temple.
