Good to know before you visit

  • The inner sanctum is not streamed live — darshan is offered in person per centuries-old temple tradition. (The grand Rath Yatra procession, however, is widely broadcast.)
  • Entry is permitted to Hindus only. Other visitors can view the temple beautifully from the rooftop of the nearby Raghunandan Library, opposite the Singhadwara (Lion Gate).
  • Mobile phones, cameras and leather items are not allowed inside. Use the cloakrooms outside the Singhadwara before entering.

Rath Yatra

June–July

The world-famous chariot festival when Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra ride three colossal hand-built chariots from the temple to the Gundicha Mandir, pulled by lakhs of devotees.

Snana Yatra

May–June

On the full moon of Jyeshtha the deities are bathed with 108 pots of water on the Snana Bedi in full public view, after which they 'fall ill' and rest in seclusion.

Chandan Yatra

April–May

A 21-day spring festival when representative deities are taken out on boats in the Narendra tank, anointed with cooling sandalwood paste.

The first ritual of the day to awaken the deities, performed inside the sanctum before public darshan begins.

Mahaprasad Bhog

The sacred food cooked in earthen pots and offered to the Lord, then shared at the Ananda Bazaar — considered exceptionally holy.

Sakala Dhupa

The morning food offering accompanied by elaborate sevas; one of the day's principal rituals before the deities are dressed for darshan.

Best Season

October to February — pleasant coastal weather; visit during Rath Yatra (June–July) for the spectacle, though crowds are immense.

Dress Code

Entry is permitted to Hindus only. Modest traditional attire; leather items, phones and cameras must be left at the cloakrooms outside the Singhadwara.

How to reach

Puri is a railway terminus with direct trains from Kolkata, Delhi and Bhubaneswar. Autos and taxis reach the temple within minutes of the station.
