About Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple

Guarded by a towering golden statue of Lord Murugan, the Batu Caves temple near Kuala Lumpur sits within a limestone cave reached by 272 colourful steps. It is the focal point of Malaysia's Thaipusam.

Thaipusam

January–February

Batu Caves' overwhelming festival — well over a million devotees climb the 272 steps, many carrying ornate kavadis or pots of milk in fulfilment of vows to Bhagwan Murugan.

Panguni Uthiram

March–April

A festival honouring Murugan with processions and special worship, drawing large crowds to the hill shrine.

Deepavali

October–November

The festival of lights is celebrated with prayers and a festive atmosphere across the temple complex.

Nearest Railway

Batu Caves station is the northern terminus of the KTM Komuter line, directly at the foot of the steps.

Best Season

Best outside the monsoon; Thaipusam (Jan–Feb) is the most dramatic but extremely crowded time.

Dress Code

Modest dress with shoulders and knees covered; sarongs may be required for those in shorts. Footwear is removed at the cave temple.

How to reach

A direct commuter train from KL Sentral, or a 30-minute drive from central Kuala Lumpur. Climb the 272 steps to the main temple cave.
